Dilemmas of Modernity 200 Years
of Central Europe Cultures and Societies

Online International PhD Conference, held in Warsaw, the 20-22 of May 2021

This conference is addressed at 4EU+ PhD candidates dealing with Central Europe in social sciences or humanities, and willing to be part of an interdisciplinary scientific community (other Ph.D. Candidates, Professors) dealing with the area. The College for Central European Studies organizes an International PhD Conference „Dilemmas of Modernity 200 Years of Central Europe”. A publication is planned.

Registration: If you are interested, please send an email to a.weselak@uw.edu.pl, by the 1st of March 2021 with your name, discipline, university, title of the Ph.D., name of the supervisor and abstract.
The abstract should be in English and contain a 300-350-word description of the state of their research (including research title, research objectives/questions and methodology) and a problem they would like to address in the symposium.

The purpose of the conference is to present compelling and innovative research activities arising from doctoral studies at six universities of the 4EU+ Alliance: Sorbonne University, Charles University in Prague, Copenhagen University, Heidelberg University, University of Milan and University of Warsaw. In each of these universities, doctoral theses are being developed on Cultures and Societies of Central Europe, both throughout the region, the nations, individuals, groups. Many of these projects address social and cultural issues in the broad sense (including political) and one of the overarching categories of modernity and modernization. During the conference, these projects would be presented by young researchers and discussed. An essential aspect of the conference will be the mutual exchange of scientific experiences, research tools, approaches to the conceptualization of the Central Europe’s issues. The comparative perspective will be complemented by a critical view, which is reflected in the peer review of the work presented by doctoral candidates from different countries, representing diverse disciplines, scientific centers, and research approaches, which can consequently contribute to improving the quality of their work.

College of Central European Studies

The College integrates teachers and researchers working on Central Europe in the different universities and disciplinary fields, and who will coordinate courses or, in the longer term, diplomas in the field of Central European Studies. The aim is to create a network of lectures, that will transform progressively into a common European diploma, with various specializations, accredited by University of Warsaw, Charles University in Prague, Sorbonne University, Heidelberg

University, and from another 4U+ universities in the future.
